National Uniform Day is all about celebrating the impact of uniforms, recognizing that great workwear is far more than just clothing—it’s a powerful tool for branding, culture, and unity.
To honor the occasion, we sat down with an expert who knows a thing or two about dressing a team for success: Melissa Deatherage, a Uniform Program Solutions Expert and Creative Brand Consultant at HPI, Powered by BAMKO. As BAMKO’s dedicated uniform division, HPI is recognized for designing programs that have a significant impact on a brand’s identity and culture.
In this Q&A, Melissa shares her insights on how your uniform can be a brand asset, from the intricate design process and the competitive advantage of a vertically integrated supply chain to the future trends shaping how we dress for work. Let’s dive in and explore the true power of a great uniform.
Q: National Uniform Day shines a spotlight on the importance of uniforms. In your opinion, what is the role of a uniform in enhancing a company’s brand, culture, and employee morale?
A uniform is far more than just a piece of clothing; it’s a powerful tool that works on multiple levels to define a company’s identity and culture. On a fundamental level, it’s a visual representation of the brand—a consistent, walking billboard that communicates professionalism, credibility, and quality to every customer. A well-designed uniform instantly tells a story, ensuring that every employee touchpoint reinforces the company’s brand identity.
Beyond branding, a uniform plays a crucial role in building internal morale and culture. It serves as a great equalizer, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among employees and creating a “we’re all in this together” mindset. When a uniform is comfortable, functional, and stylish, it makes employees feel confident and proud of their work. This investment in their appearance and comfort shows that the company values them, which in turn boosts morale and encourages a professional and dedicated attitude.
Q: How does your team approach the uniform design process? How do you ensure each product is both functional and stylish across different roles?
When it comes to uniform programs, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, we have decades of experience creating a complete suite of workwear tailored to our clients’ unique needs. It’s about blending style with functionality so that every piece serves a purpose, whether it’s for safety in a warehouse or professional presence on the front lines. We work closely with our clients to understand the various roles within their organizations and the specific requirements of each job. We dive deep into the details, from fabric selection and sewing patterns to color psychology and storytelling through design.
A great example of this is our partnership with CVS. We didn’t just design uniforms; we engaged in multiple rounds of employee surveys, prototyping, and testing to ensure that every piece—from the pharmacist’s jacket to the cashier’s quarter-zip—was perfectly curated for both function and making a distinguished brand statement.
Q: How do BAMKO’s capabilities give HPI customers a competitive advantage?

By controlling the process end-to-end—design, sourcing, and distribution, we remove complexity and cost while delivering innovative, scalable solutions. We’re not just a design company or a distributor; we’re a vertically integrated partner.

With dedicated experts in uniforms, branded merchandise, and retail, we deliver a cohesive client experience that drives efficiency, vendor consolidation, and brand integrity. Not to mention, we leverage the same in-house creative and design expertise that powers BAMKO’s innovative promotional products. This ensures that our uniforms are not only durable and functional but also on-trend and stylish, helping our clients seriously stand out.
Q: Looking ahead, what emerging trends do you see shaping the future of uniform design?
One major emerging trend in uniform design is the focus on comfort as a critical driver of performance, safety, and employee satisfaction. Comfort is no longer optional—it’s essential. Advances in textile technology, such as moisture management and ergonomic fit, help reduce fatigue, improve focus, and lower the risk of injury, directly influencing overall performance and well-being.
Today, the best uniforms are more than functional or aesthetic; when comfort is prioritized, a uniform becomes a strategic tool that elevates employee experience, enhances well-being, boosts engagement and productivity, and strengthens the brand.
Q: What’s your favorite uniform program you’ve ever worked on, and why?
I loved working on the PiNK Collection for Spirit Airlines. The project was a powerful example of how uniforms can go beyond brand identity to create a movement. Spirit traded their iconic yellow for a splash of pink to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it was a huge success. The collection not only boosted employee morale and engagement but also drove donations for BRCAStrong, supporting those affected by breast cancer.
The PiNK Collection sold out within 24 hours, driving tons of press coverage and engagement with the Spirit brand. Not to mention, the project ultimately won NAUMD’s Image of the Year award! It was a massive success and an honor to be a part of.
